Fu-me...wait I mean, fuyu!
This Japanese fruit is not only super healthy for you (its about 100 calories, and has tons of vitamins and minerals) but also can be used in a variety of ways. Seriously, i'm not kidding! In Japan it has been used for hundreds of years both to eat and to waterproof materials (such as buildings). As much as this did seem a little concerning that it can be used as a water repellant we figured that since it is still eaten in Japan today it would be safe for us to eat too....hopefully?
And guess what? It is pretty good! It has a sublte peach taste with the texture of an apple. However, according to experts (yes there are fuyu persimmon experts) there are over 150 different varieties. The flavors range from very bitter to sweet depending on the softness, color, and type. The easiest way to tell is that if the Fuyu Persimmon is more reddish in color than yellow it will generally be sweet.
