step back with us . . . .
into the glamour and decadence
of 1930's shanghai. come dance beneath
a chinese dragon and strings of glowing golden
lanterns.  sip secret elixirs, eat dim sum, and watch
an evening of beautiful performances conjured from the
dimly lit nightclubs of old shanghai. dust off your chinese
fans, unpack the cheongsams, international attire, kimonos,
your gowns and tuxedos, and  come to our signature soirée.
it will be a very special lunar new year's celebration!  come
ring in the year of the fire rooster, chinese year 4715, in
a beautiful old church. toast the new year for a
second time, and dance with us until the
wee hours, as we transport you to
an nightclub in old
shanghai.

新年快乐

by the mid 1920s,
shanghai was known as "the
paris of the east", due to its glamorous
nightlife and european influences. it was by far
the largest trading port in asia, and arguably, the most
decadent place on earth. gangsters ran the lucrative opium
trade, and allegedly, the secret police. violence was rampant,
especially for many native chinese, who were subject to both
political oppression, and poverty. shanghai was also home
to thousands of back-alley opium dens, brothels, hot jazz
clubs, and gambling casinos, filled with the glitterati.
it was also the golden age of chinese cinema, and
theaters showed high quality chinese films
that reflected the many and varied
walks of chinese life.

come dressed
as a famous chinese actress,
a peking opera star, an opium trader,
an underworld kingpin, a displaced russian
aristocrat, a visiting japanese geisha, a gambler,
a british socialite, indian nobility, a shanghai lounge
singer, a french sailor, a taxi dancer, a corrupt police
chief, or any of the myriad characters that lit up
the fervent world of shanghai's nightlife
in its very dramatic and colorful
colonial era.
