Best things to do in San Jose, Costa Rica

February 8, 2019 | Stefanie DiMartino

San Jose is Costa Rica’s capital. It’s often a spot that is overlooked by travelers but there are tons of cool things to do here. Watch my video below for my top picks in this vibrant Latin city.

LA FERIA VERDE

This fair happens every Saturday morning until noon and features sustainable and organic restaurants and products. I loved having breakfast here every weekend and enjoying the bohemian vibe. It is also a great place for family and kids. Click here to visit their site.

AVENIDA CENTRAL

Avenida Central is the main shopping area in San Jose. It is bustling all day and is filled with street performers and musicians on the weekends. There are tons of street vendors selling all types of goods from clothing to electronics and toys.

MERCADO CENTRAL

This is the place to go if you want to try the local food. What I noticed in San Jose is that there are many chain restaurants. However, if you want a more authentic experience then you should head to the Mercado Central for a bite to eat. Stop at any of the vendors and order what your nose tells you to. You won’t be disappointed here. Plus, your wallet will be happy!

MUSEO NATIONAL DE COSTA RICA

If you’re a history buff, then you’ll love this museum. It talks about Costa Rica from nearly the beginning of time to present day. It is also in an old fortress, which you can tour. Click here to visit their site.

MIL 948

As a craft cocktail fanatic this place was my haven. They make a killer cocktail, plus the head bar tender placed #13 best in the world for mixologists and #3 in Latin America. In addition to a good drink, they also have a fascinating history. The bar is located inside the old President’s house, which makes for a lovely atmosphere. Click here to visit their site.
