glowing bio bay
vieques, puerto rico
There are few places on earth that have bioluminescent bays and none of them are as vibrant as Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico. During the day this bay looks like nothing more than a muddy body of water, however, at night it is home to one of the most incredible light shows on earth.
Bioluminescent plankton live in the bay that are phosphorescent when you disturb the water. Essentially this means that it has a chemical reaction that causes it to emit light when anything touches it. Gazing only at the water, not beyond to the lush forest, it feels almost cosmic in nature with the glowing blue light surrounding your kayak. It was awe-inspiring interacting with an organism that is smaller than the head of a pin, yet is able to put on a display rarely witnessed in nature.
